"Ojakgyo Family" and its increasing popularity KBS's weekend family drama, "Ojakgyo Family" recorded a viewer rating of 33.3%. Because of its soaring popularity, the producers decided to add eight more episodes to the series and now with a solid background of the characters in the second half, the drama will expectedly finish strong in 2012. Even receiving eight different awards at the KBS Drama Awards which was held back in December of last year, this comedy-drama revolves around a family that lives on Ojakkyo Farm with four grown sons. The first son, Hwang Tae-shik (Jung Woong-in) is sensitive and is always teased by his younger brothers. Before working as a physical therapist, he went through lifetime of failures with his relationships and because of his past mistakes. In most dramas, the eldest is traditionally the dependable one that acts as the head of the household, but it's his second and third younger siblings that supports the family financially. Working as a news reporter, the second son is Hwang Tae-bum (Ryu Soo-young). He is the competitive perfectionist, and with his undeniable charms, he seems to be the perfect son-in-law. But with problems surrounding his female boss, Cha Soo-young (Choi Jung-yoon) at work and him, he will be faced with many unexpected turn of events. The third son is Hwang Tae-hee (Joo-won) who is violent and aggressive as he is a cop, but at home, he is honest and gentle. He will play alongside Ja-eun in which the two develop special feelings for another and are on their way to start their rocky relationship together. The fourth and the youngest son, Hwang Tae-pil (Yun Woo-jin) is a mama's boy. His relationship with Tae-hee really isn't the best. Holding the title of being the youngest, he acts immaturely yet he has a pure heart. The spoiled Baek Ja-eun (Uee) is the only daughter of the Ojakgyo's real owner. On the verge of bankruptcy, her father comes to reclaim the farm. After her father goes missing in a boat crash in China, Ja-eun's glorious life is replaced with a lonely and homeless one. But through the unfortunate events with the Ojakgyo family, we can see Ja-eun's growth. Rather than giving up after the mother of Ojakgyo family trashed her, Ja-eun goes out of her way to find a job to support herself. It feels like with the popularity of "Ojakgyo Family," Uee has surprisingly evolved as an actress and laid behind all those accsuations of idol-turned actor stereotypes under a good light. Furthermore, the interactions of the different family members with their contrasting stories make the drama interesting and engaging. The script is very well-layered with a touch of humor and warmth, and every character has both good and bad traits, so they are very likable even though they might frustrate us sometimes with their actions. The fact that the producers focus on one or two brothers per episode for the main stories, while having the others in the background is also a good set-up so that each character shines in rotation.
